4th USS Perry Reunion
Rick Flanagan, RD3 55 - 58

The fourth USS Perry (DD844/DMS 17) was held in Charleston, South Carolina on September 29th through October 3rd of 2004. The reunion was hosted by the Clarion Hotel and the Charleston Convention and Group Services, Inc. Our Treasurer, Steve Silk was the coordinator of the festivities and his hard work was greatly appreciated.

The event scheduled by the Charleston Convention and Group Services, (see Itinerary), was outstanding. The events ranged from a tour of Patriots Point and the world’s largest naval maritime museum to a tour of historic plantations at Fort Moultrie and Boone Hall. The tour of the Aircraft Carrier Yorktown and the memorial service for shipmates, who are no longer with us, was particularly memorable.

On Saturday afternoon, the Perry Reunion business meeting was held, (see business meeting minutes). Martin Denney was installed as our new President. The rest of the officers were willing to serve for another year. Steve Silk was installed as the information officer, as well as Rick Flanagan as the historian for the group. The financial statement for the reunion was presented by Steve Silk, and the showed a balance of $3735.00, as of 9/5/04, (see financial statement). A motion was made and seconded to change the bylaws to allow the reunion site to be selected at the general meeting of the members of the reunion association. This motion passed and the members selected Washington, DC as the site of the 2006 reunion. Joe Malmendier volunteered to coordinate our next reunion.

The dinner on Saturday night was the highlight of the festivities. In addition to a fantastic meal, individual lithographs of the USS Perry were presented to all members present. Individual awards were presented to members of our group that had distinguished themselves in support of the Perry Reunion Association. Most notable was the scale model of the Perry, presented to our past president and webmaster, Steve Silk.

We were happy to receive twenty new members into our group. Each was recognized at the banquet on Saturday night. Our grand total of members and guests at the Fourth Perry Reunion was 151.
