Reunion Interest Is High!

We are somewhat overwhelmed by the interest shown in the reunion, and in the formation of the USS Perry Reunion Association. Like us, many shipmates feel that a USS Perry reunion is long overdue. A list of shipmates who plan on attending the reunion was to be included in this newsletter, but due to the need to respond to all the inquiries we were not able to put it together before we needed to publish.

The First USS Perry Reunion will be held April 7-10, 2000 in Virginia Beach, VA!
We are particularly pleased with the financial support received, as it demonstrates a solid commitment to the continuance of the Reunion Association. Several shipmates, who expressed regret that they are unable to attend this first reunion, sent the requested $15.00 (and more) seed money for the Reunion Association. Shipmates on a tight budget are also welcome to become members of the association; they need only send a post card confirming their interest to the Secretary. Many shipmates who have said that they do plan on attending the reunion have also sent the additional $10.00 required (total $25.00). So, we organizers are certain that we won't have to get jobs flipping burgers to cover the reunion and internet web site expenses.

Don't Be Disappointed - Get Your Reservations In!

The most important reservations to make are for travel and your hotel. You need to make your own, but we have negotiated a special hotel rate for you:

Oceanfront rooms can be reserved for $54.90/night for Friday, April 7 check in, and Monday, April 10 check out; additional nights negotiable. Check in at 4:00 p.m. Check out before 11:00 a.m. Oceanfront rooms have: balconies, refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, 25" TV. Hotel has non-smoking rooms, laundry facilities, oceanfront pool and a Hospitality Room for us at no charge. Adjacent to Angelo's Restaurant, with banquet facilities.

When making reservations: mention USS Perry Reunion, Group G-1503. Flat rate for Singles/ Doubles/ Triples/Quads: $54.90/room/night (taxes included). All reservations must be guaranteed by a major credit card, or one night's deposit. All checks must be received 16 days prior to day of arrival. Credit cards are authorized 72 hours prior to the date of arrival. Reservations using declined credit cards will be canceled. Rooms not reserved prior to March 23, 2000 will be released from the group block. Cancellation of individual room(s) must be received prior to 4:00 p.m. on April 4, 2000 for refund of deposit.

All tours begin and end, and all activities take place, at the Howard Johnson's Hotel.

Tour Reservations will be made by the Reunion Association. Details of the tours are given below. Send your check for the tour(s) you wish to take to Joe Malmendier, Association Secretary/Treasurer. If you have not already sent the required seed money donation of $25, please include it with your reservation(s) check. The seed money is needed to cover expenses for the Hospitality Room, Banquet guest meals, USS Perry web site operation, newsletter printing and mailing, and other costs associated with the reunion program and Reunion Association operation. The organizers would also like to recover their advance outlays.

Banquet Reservations will also be made in advance by the Association. We will not know what the exact cost will be until we have a reasonable idea of how many will be attending (Catch 22). Based on the cost of banquets for other ship reunions, and the prices on the menu we have, it looks like the cost would run around $35/person. The head count must be known, and menu selection done before March 8. So, it is important that we know as soon as possible how many shipmates and significant others want to attend the Reunion Banquet. Include a note with your tour reservations, or send it to Joe as soon as you make your decision. Those intending to come to the banquet will be billed once the cost is known.

Breakfasts have not been arranged yet, but could be if you indicate an interest in having them. Continental breakfasts could probably be arranged on short notice.

Tour Policy, Costs, Timing and Itineraries

Policy - Package price includes forty-six passenger bus, tour guide, admissions as listed, meals as listed, planning services and taxes. Gratuities & for guide and driver are not included, and are at the discretion of the individual. Pricing is based on a minimum of thirty people per bus. Last minute participants will be accommodated on a space available basis, No refunds for cancellations for the Spirit of Norfolk after March 25, 2000. Refunds for the other tours will be issued up until April 1, 2000.

WILLIAMSBURG & JAMESTOWN ISLAND TOUR

Friday, April 7, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; $30.00 per person inclusive.

Note: Time of this tour would probably require arrival on Thursday for most participants.

Depart via motor coach for the charming town of Williamsburg. Your guide will provide interesting and informative talk during your ride about the historic Virginia Peninsulas and the Hampton Roads area. Once you arrive in Williamsburg, you will step back into the 18th century while strolling through the streets of the colonial village . Your historical interpreter will guide you through the past and the events that helped shape America's history as you enjoy a one and one hour leisurely tour through the restored area of this lovely colonial capital city (actual distance is approximately 4-5 blocks).

Following your overview tour, enjoy time to shop and browse in the many unique specialty shops in Merchants Square. High quality apparel, gifts, jewelry, unusual quilts, and holiday decorations are but a few of the offerings found in the quaint picturesque shopping area. Enjoy lunch on your own in one of the colonial taverns or in Merchants Square. Your guide will point out all of the dining options as you pass through town.

Next board the bus and admire the view as you ride along the scenic Colonial Parkway to Jamestown Island, original site of the first permanent English settlement in America in 1607. Exhibits include miniatures of the 17th century settlement and a Visitors Center with a 15 minute film, museum, and gift shop. Also on display at this time are recent archeological finds, including the 400 year old skeletal remains of one of the first settlers. Archeological digs are ongoing and open for daily observation.

VIRGINIA BEACH AND NORFOLK NAVAL BASE TOUR

Saturday, April 8, 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., $22.00 per person inclusive

Depart the hotel with your tour guide for a drive through Virginia Beach. You will enjoy beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay during your narrated riding tour. See the historic lighthouses and the First Landing Cross at Cape Henry where the English colonists first came ashore in 1607, prior to settling at Jamestown. Walk out on the overlook to see where the bay and the ocean meet, and where the famous Battle of the Capes took place during the Revolutionary War. Ride down the resort strip, see the Boardwalk, the Norwegian Lady Statue at the Old Coast Guard Museum, the landmark Cavalier Hotel, and many other points of interest.

Next tour, the Norfolk Naval Base, the largest naval installation in the world. Home port to over 100 ships, 26 aircraft squadrons and headquarters of the Atlantic Fleet, the base occupies over 9,000 acres of land and is home to more than 100,000 military personnel. Your tour will take you past the piers, where you will see submarines and aircraft carriers, and numerous other types of vessels. Drive through the Naval Air Station, home of the Navy's E2C Hawkeyes, and past the beautifully landscaped historic homes built for the 1907 Jamestown Exposition on "Admiral's Row", which now house the flag officers.

Following your tour a brief stop will be made at the gift shop. Enjoy lunch on your own at the base. A ship tour will be requested for your group, should this not be available, you we will visit the Hampton Roads Naval Museum located in downtown Norfolk, this Is one of ten museums officially operated by the United States Navy. Highlights of naval battles and exhibits of detailed ship models, art work and memorabilia are show-cased in the museum.

Spirit of Norfolk Lunch Cruise and Norfolk City Tour

Sunday, April 9, 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., $46.00 per person inclusive

Depart via motor coach with your tour guide for the short drive into downtown Norfolk to enjoy a narrated riding city tour. View the Chrysler Museum, the lovely homes along the Hague, the Moses Myers House, old St. Paul's Church and many other points of interest. Visit the MacArthur Memorial for a glimpse into our country's history. During your visit you will view the outstanding collection of artifacts, documents, photographs and memorabilia housed in Norfolk's historic city hall, which trace the life and times of five-star General Douglas MacArthur, You will also have the opportunity to view the 25 minute film which chronicles General MacArthur's life. The General Is entombed in the rotunda of the memorial. A gift shop with unique memorabilia is located on the premises.

Next, at Town Point Park, board the magnificent Spirit of Norfolk for a two hour luncheon cruise. Feast on a sumptuous buffet and enjoy the informative narration as you cruise through the Hampton Roads Harbor. View the many interesting sights along the waterfront, including the mighty aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines at the Norfolk Naval Base. Enjoy dancing and a show following lunch. The ship has two climate controlled lower decks and an open air upper deck.

Following your cruise, visit the brand new world class shopping center, MacArthur Center Mall. Anchored by Nordstom's and Dullard's, and offering over 100 specialty shops, boutiques and restaurants, this beautiful new mall is considered to be one of the most outstanding in the entire Mid-Atlantic region. Special discount coupon books will be made available for the members of the USS Perry Reunion group.

USS Perry Reunion Association Membership

We have done surprisingly well in finding shipmates to notify about this first reunion. There will be a good mix of shipmates from over the years that the Perry was in service. Some people have been concerned about whether or not they would know anybody at the reunion. Your best buddies may not have signed up yet, but you can be sure you will meet guys who were on board when you were. Having a good mix of shipmates will give you a chance to learn about the Perry's adventures from post-WWII to Vietnam.

Maybe your best buddies haven't heard about the reunion or the association yet. Let's get them onboard! It's up to all of us to spread the word to our shipmates. There is still enough time before the reunion to get the information to them. Send Joe Malmendier the names and last known addresses (postal, e-mail, phone, or Fax) for any shipmates you remember. If all you can remember is a name with a hometown and/or state, send that. Middle initials can be a big help too in identifying the right guy. Send the informa-tion to Joe (addresses on page 1) even if you have contacted a shipmate about the reunion and the association yourself. We want to log him in so that we can send him future communications.

The more attendees we have, the more memorable our first reunion will be. The SHIPS CREW listing on the Perry web site (http://www.ussperry.webprovider.com/) is being updated and shows only a small part of the shipmates we have contacted.
