Final Voyage

Norman Simonelli
MMC, 55-60, USS Perry
Commander, USN Ret.

Dear Shipmates,

I was deeply saddened to have learned from the Simonelli children, Michael and Mary Ellen that our shipmate Norman has taken his final voyage on December 3, 2013. I can hardly believe it. Just a few days earlier, Norm sounded very optimistic when he spoke of the medical issues he was managing.

To all who have had the pleasure to know Norm and especially those of us who served with him, know he was a 4.0 sailor, gentleman and true friend. Norm, a very active Perry family member was always willing to share his experience as well as his inventory of Perry ball cap and the ship's patches he donated to our Perry Association. In September of 2011 Norm tried to coincide the USS Rodman (Norm's 1st ship) Mystic Reunion with that of the Perry. Unfortunately we were all disappointed when our dates couldn't be worked out.

Norm may be 'gone but never forgotten'. He will be remembered at our next reunion when we pay tribute to our shipmates that have taken their Final Voyage since our last gathering. His name will also be entered into the roster of all Perry shipmates that have sailed on before him. While many of us have already begun to enjoy this Holy and Festive Season we must remember, for others the Holiday Season is always a very sad time of the year and will be especially sad for the Simonelli family who will be without a husband, father and grandfather.

On behalf of the USS Perry Assn. our deepest sympathy is extended to the Simonelli family.
Smooth sailing mate
Steve Silk
